Podcasts for Plodding

I used to listen to music when I ran but over the past couple of years, I’ve completely switched over to listening to Podcasts. I know, incredibly geeky and definitely has no rhythm for running. The Podcasts I listen to do keep me entertained and I don’t have to try to find “energetic” Podcasts that keep my pace up like I did with music.

The Podcasts that I listen to are:

  • The Java Posse. These guys are great, they love tools (for writing software) and are very smart. The emphasis here is on Java but lately, they’ve been focusing on some of the other languages that run on the JVM like Scala and Groovy.
  • Security Now. Leo Laporte and Steve Gibson riff on the security issues of the day. Lots of good stuff but you have to wade through a few commercials they read.
  • MacBreak Weekly. Leo Laporte and a variety of hosts talk about themselves and their various Apple products. This is a pretty lightweight Podcast, it’s like brain candy if you are a Mac fan.

I also keep a few episodes of Car Talk on my Palm Pre but I rarely have time to listen to them before I update the others. I used to listen to Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me but again, I didn’t have time so I stopped downloading it.

Opting Out of Google

Google Opt Out Feature Lets Users Protect Privacy By Moving To Remote Village

I uploaded a bunch of videos to YouTube of the kids at their recital this past spring. It’s only taken me about three months to do it. The videos are after the jump.

Our photo site (http://photos.meagherfamily.org) is back online after being down for some months while I studiously ignored the configuration issues it had. While I was fixing the configuration issues, I upgraded to the newest version of the Gallery2 sofware (which can be found here), it has a cool new slideshow feature so be sure to check it out. There aren’t any new pictures as of yet but there will be soon…

Geeky Quiz

See if you can figure out what the following command line does, post your answers in the comments:

Hi everyone! After about three years of forgetting this website existed, I’m back. I re-found this website by doing this: While typing in the address of my website in the address bar, I suddenly got the brain-spark that I should try to figure out what my friend Charlotte was doing wrong in her search for my website. She had gotten on once and couldn’t remember how to do it again. I typed in all mistakes she might have made while trying to reach the site. The last one I tried was meghan.meagherfamily.com. It came up with an error, and had done a google search of meghan meagherfamily for me. It had come up with: The Meaghers
Now we’re going to have Meghan Meagher singing “Candle on the Water” … Just a reminder that you can see our photos here http://photos.meagherfamily.org. …
Wait, Meghan Meagher was MY name. And I sang “Candle on the Water” once! Is there a duplicate me, or did my parents really put that of all things on their website? It was not my best work, if I remember correctly! I clicked on the link, and just like that I remembered. I remembered that one day, on Lake Winnepessauke when I was bored to tears, I brought out my essay for school, which my dad had said we should publish on the internet, and typed it up on this blog site. It’s so weird what these websites bring back!

Post-election thought for the day: “We must love them both. Those whose opinions we share and those whose opinions we reject, for both have labored in the search for truth and both have helped us in the finding of it.”

- Thomas Aquinas
I am reminded by the words of thoughtful people who came before me.
